Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation

The Charlotte & Dick Levin Jewish Community Center, along with Jewish Family Services and the Jewish Community Foundation, is an affiliated agency of the "umbrella" organization, the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation.

Our Jewish Federation’s mission is: to strengthen and enrich the Jewish community locally, in Israel and throughout the world. Federation’s annual fundraising supports educational, social service and charitable programs that promote the Jewish values of k’lal yisrael (taking responsibility for one another), tzedakah (charity and righteousness), and tikkun olam (repairing the world).

The Federation acts as the "central address" of the Jewish community, charged with representing the community to the larger community, welcoming new residents, keeping a central calendar of events of all local synagogues and Jewish organizations, and providing communications to all members of the community. When the new JCC building opens, the Federation’s offices will be located there. Learn more about the Federation’s service to our community at www.shalomdch.org.

Partnership for a Jewish Center

Our new JCC was the dream of local community leaders. Working together since 2005 as the Partnership for a Jewish Center (PJC), the Jewish Federation and the Sandra E. Lerner Community Day School planned and raised capital funds from our local community to begin construction of a beautiful new JCC on a campus shared with the Lerner School and Judea Reform Congregation.

Several exciting Naming Opportunities are available for you to consider. Name a Mezuzah, or a Swim Lane, or the Atrium Café… among many other choices. To learn how you or your group can participate, contact us, info@levinjcc.org.

Facility Rental at the Levin JCC

The JCC features an elegant and spacious Community Hall. It is a great spot to hold your wedding, party, or special event. The Community Hall opens to an Atrium filled with beautiful natural light and a wood floor made for dancing. A variety of meeting rooms on first and second floor com-fortably seat from 6 to 30 attendees in classroom, meeting room or living room arrangement. The gym features full court basketball and volleyball and as well as two cross courts and electronic scoreboards.

Levin JCC Atrium Levin JCC Atrium
The Atrium floods with natural light during the day and in the evening the beautiful wood floor keeps the space warm and inviting. It is perfect for receptions and dancing. It is available for rental in the evenings when the building is not open for regular JCC activities. During regular business hours, guests using the Community Hall, Resource Center or Senior Lounge will move through the Atrium and might make use of the comfortable seating, the J-Café or locate event check-in in this welcoming area.

Our 700 sq ft premier meeting space with over head projection and sound system. It is easily set up for a classroom, meeting room or informal use. There are additional classrooms and lounges on first and second floor with a variety of audio visual equip-ment and seating arrangements.


Sol Schechter Community HallSol Schechter Community Hall
A carpeted open room with room for 120 guests at tables or 200 in auditorium seating. The hall has overhead projection, a large screen and a speaker system for movies or presentations. Lapel, headset and microphones on stands are available.

Levin JCC GymnasiumLevin JCC Gym
The gym has one full and two cross court basketball courts and a permanent regulation volleyball court installation. Additional features include electronic scoreboards, a sound system, and dividing curtain. The gym floods with natural light and features high performance sport court flooring.

Welcome to the Levin JCC. We are a community center open to people of all faiths and backgrounds and we invite your membership! There are there are 4 ways to join the JCC -- pick the one that's right for your interest:

All-Inclusive Community Membership. This gives you everything the JCC has to offer: access to all events, programs, classes and social get-togethers. You can enjoy use of all facilities including the fitness center, free fitness classes, and the pools. And you’ll receive members-only reduced prices on Camp Shelanu and any events, classes or programs that have a fee. Click here to see All-Inclusive pricing.

Summer Community Membership. Use all the JCC facilities and enjoy the great benefits of All-Inclusive Community Membership during the summer months when the pools are open. Discount on Camp Shelanu not included. Click here to see Summer pricing.

No Pool Membership. No Pool Memberships are available in the months when the pool is closed. No Pool Memberships are closed from May 15-September 15, when the pool is open.  Click here to see No Pool pricing.

Dear Founders,
Thanks again for joining us as a Founding Member last Fall. Our Founding Membership campaign ended on Dec. 31, 2010 with 261 Founding Members! We want you to know, nothing has changed regarding your membership dues. You will get 10% off of these annual rates for the All-Inclusive Community Membership: Family $995, Couple $844, Individual $680. No money is due now. And of course, you'll pay no initiation fee. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I already sent in a form and made a payment last Fall when I became a Founding Member, so what do I need to do now?

A: The form and payment you already sent in were for your Founding Membership tax-deductible donation. This was a gift that is helping us gear up programs, classes and services starting on Opening Day. THANK YOU!  Now is the time to get your Annual Membership process started, by filling out the Application for Membership for Founding Members (download & print OR submit online).

Q: If I am a Founding Member, am I automatically a member of the JCC?

A: No, you still need to register for Annual Membership. Just fill out the Application for Membership for Founding Members (download & print OR submit online) in order to begin the process of making you a JCC member so you can enter the building, attend programs, take classes, and use the facilities.

Q: If I fill out the Application for Membership now, do I need to pay anything now?

A: No.  You will have the option to pay in full for your annual rate, but you do not have to.  Since your initiation fee is waived, there is no money due now.  You will make your first bank draft of your monthly dues in June.

Q: When will my membership begin, and when will payment for my dues begin?

A: If you send in the Application for Membership for Founding Members (download & print OR submit online), we will be able to complete your membership process and issue you a membership key tag as soon as possible. 

Q: What perks do I get as a Founding Member?

A:

  • Your one-time member initiation fee of $100 is waived
  • If you are a Founder ($180 donation), you will receive 10% off your first year of the All-Inclusive Community Membership. 
  • If you are a Sustaining Founder ($360 donation), you will receive 10% off your first two years of the All-Inclusive Community Membership. 
  • If you are an Enriching Founder ($1800 donation) you will receive 10% off your first three years of the All-Inclusive Community Membership. 
  • Even before the 10% discount is applied, you will receive the same low rate regardless of whether you pay on an annual or monthly basis. Non-founding members pay more on a monthly basis.
  • You will receive early notice on all JCC events, programs and activities
  • You will receive a big THANK YOU for your Founding Membership inside the walls of the Levin JCC!

What green means for our JCC:

  • The orientation of the building on the site and the inclusion of deep overhangs are intended to utilize solar gain in the winter months and reduce gain in the summer months.
  • Daylighting is a significant feature of the building – virtually every habitable room is naturally lit. Window glazing materials have the highest shade coefficient and lowest heat transmittance of any on the market.
  • The building utilizes an energy management system to attain better than 30% improvement over ASHRAE standards. The building systems management is designed to protect indoor air quality.
  • Wherever possible, locally produced materials (within 350 miles) and recycled content materials have been specified.
  • A construction management plan to reduce and recycle onsite waste is incorporated in the building construction.
  • All landscaping will be with native species. Cisterns will be installed to recycle roof rainwater for gray-water landscape irrigation.
  • Erosion control of the construction site is designed to mitigate offsite silt infiltration in the Neuse River Basin.

The purchase and installation of key interior elements of the Levin JCC was and will continue to be guided by a commitment to sustainability in energy and the environment.

As we plan for a green facility and green facility management, we are taking inspiration from local experts as well as national resources like COEJL and the Greening Guide produced by UJA-Federation of New York’s Network Greening Initiative.

Splash and slide to your heart’s content! Includes 40 minutes free swim, 20 minutes activity, 30 min food/presents, reserved tables on pool deck, and inclement weather space/activity

Sports Party

My Story - Bryna Rapp

Whenever I find myself diving into a chlorinated lap pool, I have a recurring flashback to my first swim lessons at the JCC in Birmingham, Al.  Miss Joy taught me and just about everyone I knew how to swim.  Despite my serious trepidation, her friendly but firm encouragement somehow convinced me to pry myself off the wall and take the few clumsy strokes it took to grab her outstretched arm.  Her clear instructions for how to extend my arms and position my hands and time my breath are still present in my mind when I swim laps today.   I remember the exhilarating feeling of "getting it" and realizing that I was actually able to keep myself afloat.  In that moment, the world of diving boards and deep ends and water slides were suddenly part of my JCC experience.  There was no turning back.  The flashbacks don't end with the swimming however.  Even now, when I finish my laps, I find myself craving the same reward that I enjoyed back then after a successful lesson... a frozen snicker's from the snack bar.
